Study and Piloting Project of the Key Technologies of Forest Healthy Management in Beijing Mountainous Area

Background
With the aims to improve the forest resources health and environment quality in Beijing mountainous area, so as to facilitate economic development and the programme New Countryside Building, BPFDIC launched the project Study and Piloting of the Key Technologies of Forest Healthy Management in Beijing Mountainous Area after approved by Beijing Municipal Committee of Science and Technology in October 2006.

Brief introduction
The project Study and Piloting of the Key Technologies of Forest Healthy Management in Beijing Mountainous Area is a key science and technology project from municipal level supported by Beijing Municipal Committee of Science and Technology and BMBPF and implemented by BPFDIC with a duration of 4 years from 2006 to 2009.

Objectives

1.Study on the relationships between the structural health and the functional health of main forest types in Beijing mountainous area;
2.Establish forest health check and appraise system and the system of monitoring and forecasting, provide theories and experiences for Beijing forest health management;
3.Study on the control theories and technologies of the forest ecological service and functioning improvement, establish systems of the key management technologies of the main forest types in Beijing mountainous area;
4.Develop scalable healthy forest management models through test and piloting.

Activities
2006~2007

1.Establish project implementation groups and assign project contents;
2.Related investigation and select project piloting sites;
3.Establish sample plots of forest health monitoring and implementation, launch baseline survey;
4.Other project activities.

Training and exchange
The project has caught lots of attentions from domestic and abroad, and received many visitors from inner and foreign government departments like Forest Service of United States, Environment Department of Canada, Forest Service of Canada, Columbia University, GFA, WWF, CAF and more with around 140 persons.

Technical training is a important part of the project. A technical training of PC assistant modeling of forest healthy management for beijing’s forestry officers was carried at Jan 12th, 2007 given by Dr. Liu Guoliang from Columbia University following project schedule; a training of applicable technologies of forest health monitoring and appraisal was held to train 30 technicians from the 4 piloting sites for 3 days from Apr 21st to 23rd.
